One of the India's biggest challenges today is coping with the wave of urbanisation unleashed by economic liberalisation. The phenomenon of the slum is worldwide & no country or no city in any country is without slums. More than 65 million people reside in India's slums, where children are obligated to shoulder chores & crisis that typically belong to adults, but they get no say in how their quality of life could improve with feasible solutions. It is also possible that some of the localities because of continued lack of infrastructure over time have degenerated & turned into slums. Health & hygiene in slum & village communities has been a major issue.
The team Grace Ministry headed by Bro Andrew Richard & Sis Hannah visited the Bengaluru slum for community work, to which Mr. Madan Patel (Indian movie actor, director & producer) was called for as a guest of honour. This slum is a vast area which finds itself hassled amidst avid traffic & pollution, the dwellers are locals from various parts of Karnataka, who migrated here in search of livelihood. The session was started by Bro Andrew by educating the people of the slum about the importance of sanitation, healthcare, education & law & order. He also stressed upon the fact that barely organising medical camps in urban slums are not sufficient, behavioural change is also needed to ensure proper use & maintenance of these facilities & better hygienic behaviour in order to fight against diseases & other chronic conditions.
Bro Andrew also involved himself in an active & participatory teaching approach in the promotion of life's skills in this community & his team also conducted an event of a distribution of the basic staples & clothing through which hundreds of families dwelling within the slums were benefited. Thus as a result of this program, there was an improvement in the health of the slum people which also lead to the awareness among these about diseases. Today most of them have become entrepreneurs and are working to improve the standard of living in slums, sustainably with the intention that the future generations can have adequate access to basic infrastructure services such as education, water & sanitation & a healthy living as per the teachings of Bro Andrew aforetime.
