Many are experiencing a mixture of emotions after the Supreme Court announcement that the long-held abortion ruling of Roe v. Wade was overturned. Some wept relieved tears to know this law was no longer in effect, while others protested in anguish at what is believed to be a setback in women’s rights and healthcare.

Whatever way we feel about this generation-changing decision, prayer is what should guide us most in the time ahead. Instead of violence and debate over who is right and who is wrong, we need to seek God in prayer to see what His Word says about such a sensitive issue and who we are created to be as representatives of Christ.

A Prayer for Those Who Are Pro-Choice

Lord,

We come to You to seek where You are in the debate over abortion. There are those who feel this decision by the Supreme Court means there will be riskier decisions made for women’s reproductive health that could lead more women to die due to illegal abortions.

But we pray that those who believe abortion is their only option, and for those who think it is the best way, to see through Your eyes what a gift every baby is to us. Children are created by You and placed in the lives of people who may or may not be ready to be parents, but You know the purpose these children have in Your ultimate plan for the world.

So, we ask that those who are pro-choice will realize that children need to be cherished and born into love, not rejected because of timeliness. We know that some children weren’t created between loving parents, but through violent or abusive means. We ask that mothers who experience this trauma will allow their children the opportunity to live and be raised in adoptive families, or that they can be loved by them – their birth mothers – despite the means they arrived in their wombs.

Most of all, we pray that the church and the community come together to love, support, and guide these ladies carrying these precious gifts, letting them know that You love them and have great plans for them and the children they carry for You.

We ask all this in Jesus’s name,

Amen.

“Did not He who made me make them? Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?” (Job 31:15).

A Prayer for Those Who Are Pro-Life

Lord,

We come to You in appreciation that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of children’s lives and not political rights. Yes, not every baby was planned by every parent, but no matter if they were expected or unexpected, every child needs to be loved and appreciated as God’s creation.

We ask in prayer for Your love, comfort, and guiding hand to be felt by these mothers of all ages, that the church reminds these ladies how loved they are among us and that we will support them as they navigate this new path You have ahead for them.

Most of all, we pray that this ruling doesn’t become a focus of pride or arrogance among pro-life advocates, but a realization that there are still women who believe they have no other option for their unborn babies, and are desperate for dangerous solutions. We pray that we all will take up the mantle You have given us, Lord, to be the light for You in their lives. We pray that we can direct them toward You and toward knowing You personally, so they can grow in their relationship with You and raise their children to be children of God for You.

This is, in no way, a victory to celebrate in the faces of pro-choice advocates, but a time to come together as a Christian community and nation to be the loving support You have made us to be, for women who need to know You are there.

We ask all this in Jesus’s name,

Amen.
