In peace, I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8
Amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, peace can be quite elusive. We wake up to the shrill ringing of our alarms, rush to get ready on time, battle traffic woes and go to sleep with much on our minds… only to wake up the next day and repeat it all again. But despite our hurried lifestyles, it is possible to find peace. After all, our role model did sleep peacefully in the midst of a storm!
When Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you,” in John 14:27, He bequeathed us His peace. It was His inheritance to us, His disciples. But we cannot miss the source of our peace. In the previous verse (John 14:26), Jesus promises the presence of the Holy Spirit in His disciples’ lives. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are at peace because God Himself dwells in us.
The next time you find yourself fretting and losing sleep over a troubling situation, pause and ask you who dwells in you. If you truly believe you are a child of God, you must also believe that you have inherited His peace. Don’t let your worries and fears take over. Allow the peace of God to reign in your heart, irrespective of your circumstances.
