Daily Devotion - Trust in God

Psalm 71:1-2
“In You, O Lord, I put my trust; Let me never be put to shame. Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape; Incline Your ear to me, and save me.”

Psalm 71 is one of the many songs that pleas for deliverance. The petitioner is under attack or at least feels under attack. The petitions call God not only to redeem the worshipers themselves but also to act vigorously against the foe. The strength of these Prayers rises from their extensive confidence that God rescues His people from the ambushes laid in this sinful world. God does hear, he does care, and he does act—literally slaying the foe and delivering those who trust him. This shows that our God is intimately, observably, and directly involved in His children’s affairs. Here there is encouragement for the oppressed and hope for the needy.

Psalmist prays that he might never be made ashamed of his dependence upon God and never be disappointed about expectations from Him. With this petition we may come boldly to the throne of grace; for God will never disappoint the hope of His people.

We too like psalmists should express our faith and confidence in God always and specifically during challenging times of our life. We should never forget how He delivered us in the past, then surely He will do it again. So, let us trust Him, expect Him to deliver us in His righteousness, hear us when we call upon Him, and hope that the resulting breakthrough will only strengthen us to believe and trust Him more and more.

Father, give us an understanding and discernment to trust you, expect deliverance from you in our hard times. We believe you are the God who will hear our cries and surely deliver us in your righteousness. We thank you for who you are. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
