Daily Devotion - Thank Him and Call Upon Him

Psalm 116:17
“I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving, And will call upon the name of the Lord.“

This Psalm is an exuberant thanksgiving to the Lord for delivering the psalmist from death. It is difficult to be precise about the threat that hung over the psalmist, but he looks back to his cry of distress to the Lord and proclaims with gladness that God heard him. As a result, he determines to offer sacrifices to the Lord.

As the psalmist reflected on his life-threatening experience, he discovered several reasons why the Lord God delivers people from danger and death. We as those who belong to Christ partake in God’s new covenant, however, this does not mean we are free from pain and trials. Surely it does mean that God is in control and will work all things for our good and His glory. Even the death of His faithful servants is precious in His sight. We may part from loved ones here but never away from Our Saviour. This truth should always encourage us to be people who offer sacrifices of thanksgiving. Yes, it sometimes is a sacrifice and Lord knows it all. He treasures it.

If we have received kindness from a man like ourselves, we tell him that we hope we shall never trouble him again; but God is pleased to reckon the prayers of his people as an honor to him, and a delight, and no trouble; and therefore, in gratitude for former mercies, we must seek to him for further mercies, and continue to call upon him.
In today’s scenario, we have to decide like the psalmist in Ps 116:2 – “Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.”
