Matthew 1:21

“She will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Today’s verse is part of the angel’s declaration to Joseph when he found that Mary, his betrothed, was pregnant. The Bible says that Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly (Matthew 1:19). As he was considering this, the angel appeared in a dream and told him not to fear taking Mary as his wife because she was bearing the Son of God (Matthew 1:20).

We can’t imagine the fear and confusion that might have plagued Joseph at that time. But He understood His role in the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ and he did as the angel commanded him (Matthew 1:24). He took God at His word and believed that what God said would come to pass. Joseph would be instrumental in raising the promised Messiah who would save His people from their sins.

Are you going through a time of fear and confusion in your life? You probably haven’t seen an angel appearing before your eyes and giving you divine counsel. But you do have something even better. You have the Bible – the Living Word of God – to strengthen you and guide you every single day of your life. Spend some time with the Word and let it calm your anxious thoughts. As you fill yourself with what God is telling you, the truth will build up your faith and crowd out any confusion in your mind.
